The stream of fireworks burst through the paper window of the Fortree Prosperity Shrine and Puppy Shelter, igniting the underfunded bedding of the many animals that slept inside its drafty walls.
"Oh no!" Zac shouted, taking stock of the situation. The flames were spreading, and would soon reach the staircase. Upstairs the monks were still singing, unaware of the disaster that was unfolding just underneath Brother Takeshi's retirement party.
And Arceus forbid if the flames spread downstairs, to where the shrine usually kept all of the prayer letters from the city's orphans. Without them, how would the monks know who needed the flu medicine?
Zac prioritised the animals and raced towards the Poochyena puppies in their smouldering bedding, carefully stuffing his coat with the weeks-old babies before heading for the door.

"Well don't just stand there Avery! Everyone's counting on us!"

What had started out as a very normal, very relaxed, very easy-going and fun day in Fortree with her grandparents quickly turned as sour as the smoke in the air. [break][break]

Several loud kabooms indicative of fireworks sound off alarm-bells in her head, and set off a chain reaction of fires in the paper hut and shrine and -- oh no, the puppies.[break][break]

"Oh no, oh no, oh no. This isn't good, this isn't good!"[break][break]

And instead of immediately reacting, Avery's first response is to freeze up and cry for a moment while Zac rushes to gather puppies in his jacket. There are too many decisions to make and no time to make them.[break][break]

Should she run for the orphans letters? Or run to the top to warn Brother Takeshi?[break][break]

"Lucario, I need you to run downstairs and gather those letters!"[break][break]

A flash of light brings forth her partner Pokemon, and the Lucario only hesitates briefly when he realizes that Avery plans on getting to safety by running upstairs. Zac is yelling at her to move and she is spurred into action, charging up the stairs as fast as she can.[break][break]

Zac passed his outer coat to an onlooker. "Hold this! It's full of puppies!" he said, before racing back into the temple. Thankfully, he was wearing a slimmer, warmer coat underneath the first, and he pulled it off in a flash, filling it with the remaining orphaned animals.
He raced outside and passed that next bundle to another onlooker. "More little fluffballs for ya'" he said. Nearby, someone was calling the fire department. Zac ran in again, and looked around for Avery. She was gone, and the fire was spreading fast. It licked along the edges of both sets of stairs. Whichever way Zac went, he would contend with the flames on the return trip.
"Avery!" he called, but there was no answer. Swearing, he ran up the stairs.

Smoke is rising, and she uses her arm to cover her nose and mouth. It barely works and seems to only delay the inevitable. She's coughing, but she's also still running up the steps to interrupt their birthday party.[break][break]

"There's a fire! A... a fire! In the basement! Everyone needs to... get out, right now!"[break][break]

Surprise, panic, fear. It all manifests in an unrest as people hurry to evacuate. [break][break]

Lucario has already escaped the heat of the flames, the scrolls intact with the words of sick children bundled in his arms. But when he sees that Avery is not among the people outside, he drops said letters and darts back inside at the same time Zac turns to chase after her. [break][break]

Inside, Avery is on her hands and knees coughing. She seems to have attempted to make it back down the way she'd come, but her smaller, weaker frame had given up on her as a result of the smoke and heat. [break][break]

"Avery!" Zac shouted, as the woman fell to the ground. Lucario sprinted past Zac, making it to her side far faster than the trainer could. "Get her out of here!" Zac ordered the Pokemon. It was probably well trained enough to know how to handle the situation, but in the absence of a trainer it was best to make sure.
"Okay Busta, it's time to douse these flames! But first, give Avery a shot of the good stuff!" Clawitzer emerged in a salty spray, and lobbed a glob of healing water at the unconscious Avery. It splashed over her, soaking into her skin. Hopefully it was enough.
Meanwhile, the fires had now spread up the wall and stairs. The whole second floor of the temple was a roaring inferno.

Lucario doesn't need Zac's orders, but he heeds them regardless. The Pokemon's arms scoop beneath the woman, lifting her from her knees and shoulders to press her close to his chest. He hesitates, if only to momentarily look her over for burns or injury, before turning to flee the building.[break][break]

He hesitates again when the man orders his Pokemon to spray his trainer with water. It rouses Avery, apparently, as she chokes and sputters on the water that soaks into her clothing. But the gesture is welcomed, and refreshing.[break][break]

Lucario dips his head in approval and appreciation before carrying Avery out into the fresh air, away from the burning building. People flock to her aid to make sure she's okay.[break][break]

Turns out, she had stopped inside to scoop up one remaining puppy. The Poochyena had been hidden in her arms, and it wriggles, soaked, to find the nudging nose of a worried mother Mightyena.[break][break]

  Clawitzer struggled with the blaze. Blast after blast of high-pressure water thudded against stairs, ceiling and structure, but as the flames consumed the ornate, ancient wood the power of Busta's attacks began to shatter the break down the damaged wood. "We gotta leave, buddy!"
    Shrimp and trainer were forced backwards by the heat, stumbling out onto the dog-strewn gravel.
  "Move back, everyone!" Zac called, arms wide, as he pushed back the onlookers. A crackling, barrier of heat pushed the gasping locals away from their collapsing temple.

     Firemen arrived, and a crew of Blastoise and Starmie set to work dousing the structure and the nearby pines. Clawitzer kept blasting away, aiding the professionals where he could.

Behind her, Zac and his Clawitzer do their best to combat the flames. Avery is absorbed into the crowd of approaching Rangers, wrapped up in blankets and smothered with questions. She is out of breath and doing her best to respond, but out of the corner of her eye she can see that the Mightyena mother has gathered all of her pups. [break][break]

It brings a smile, and a sigh of relief to her face. But it is Zac's voice rising above the others, above even the roar of the flame, that brings her back to him. His arms are held wide and the Rangers collapse around him, soaking the building from different angles. Sirens are alarming, vehicles are moving in, Blastoise are surrounding the building.[break][break]

And Avery gets to her feet to run for Zac, her tiny body slamming into his in a gigantic hug. Little but mighty.[break][break]

"Thank you for saving those puppies."[break][break]

"Protect those who can't protect themselves, right?" Zac said, winded from the force of Avery's affection. He smiled and wrapped his friend in his huge embrace. Zac appreciated a good hug, and he wasn't going to break the grip of a woman who had been unconscious a few minutes ago.
"How are they. Alright?" Zac asked the top of Avery's head. He looked over at the bundle of Poochyena and couldn't see or hear any problems. Aside from a few flecks of smoke and dust, the dogs looked unharmed. Tension flowed from Zac, and he slumped, mirroring the collapsing building behind them. They would rebuild in no time. It was only a temple.
